scott... you should wash coffee pots, but not the inside of a teapot (my
english granny was very particular about that). maybe something to do with
the tannic acid..? maybe there is another reason, but i just know the tea
just tastes better.

if you cant stand tea stains on the inside of your cup, however, you can get
it off by rubbing salt on the stains.

Hi Scott,

If you intend to use them for Tea, then no, you should not
wash them, but, merely sluice some water in them immediately
after use, for a rinse...or, you should not wash them
otherwise, on the inside anyway...

You could wash them on their outside and be allright.

The same is true of Coffee Pots...that is, actual ones...(as
distinct from the figurative calling-so of Mr. Coffee glass
caraffes and the likes...)

( I too, feel that einstein shouldabeena plumber...but oh
well...and oppie, shouldabeena shoe salesman, women's shoes
in fact, especially really 'large' women seeking dainty
shoes, in a store just-for-that...and teller shouldabeena
grocery clerk, in a really 'bad' neighborhood somewhere,
and...well, sigh...kinda late now...)

sorry.. my understanding of washing teapot is with soap. lol .. dont wash
the inside of your teapot with soap, but its imprtant to rinse it out
thoroughly.. as mike says, you definitely dont want to leave tea, tea bags,
or tea leaves sitting in it as they will go moldy.

re coffee pots? if you dont clean your coffee pot, your coffee will taste
like dirty coffee pot.. like the coffee u get at the bus station. not a
proven fact, just my observation... could be that they just use cheap
coffee. hmmmm.... i dano..

cleaning your coffee cup with soap is a good thing.. i used to just rinse
out my cup at the end of the day and leave it on my dest when i worked in an
office but started to wash it with soap whe i found out that over time
bacteria builds up (i guess cuz of contact with milk, sugar, or your mouth)
and your cup becomes a breeding ground. made sense to me anyways.

Absolutely, wash your teapot. Have you been neglecting yours? I was
wondering about that smell...: )
Seriously though, and I'm sure you'll hear dissent to my opinion, but I
never use soap to wash my teapots, and
all my teapots have been unglazed, or crackle glaze. I've never had a
problem, ever.
Everyone I know here in Japan is the same regarding this. Use the teapot,
wash the teapot (no soap) almost immediately after use. Don't leave it
full of leaves for hours or days, Don't leave it soaking in the sink. Just
wash it and dry it quickly.
This applies to just about all other stoneware (and some overglaze enamel
porcelain) as well.
Ok, that said, now everyone can sock it to me about sanitary practices.
