I always use a cone - and watch it fall - how else would you know what cone
you are firing to?
As for firing by colour - I'd like to test those who say they can - with
cones. Besides - you only get to see one part of the kiln - how can you
make addjustments if you don't know whats going on in the other parts of
the kiln?
Always a good idea to be there at the end of a firing - you can shut your
kiln off properly - there is no other way that I would recommend.
