i have seen this done many times, it is a quick way, but not the best. I have done this on coffin kilns, we used large silicon carbide shelves, and then covered them with soft brick so it would reduce the shelves tendency to crack when heated uneven. a shelf lid will work, not the most efficient way, but an easy one.
