Dear Clayarters,
Here is the recipe for the Cornwall Stone glaze that I used many years ago
before the mine shut down.
Staffel's Cornwall Stone Glaze LACS from Carlton Ball
Oxidation Cone 9
Cornwall Stone, Original 1548
Flint 168
Whiting 564
Zinc 258
Kaolin 762
3300
Bentonite 2%
Tin Oxide 5%
I believe I also added CMC at 1/4%. Again I say that the CMC has never ever
spoiled for me. I use hot water to slake the dry ingredients and dry mix
the CMC and Bentonite with one of the ingredients for good dispersion. Then
run through your glaze screen a couple of times for a good mix. My
hydrometer reads 17 or 1.7 forget which type of number is used.
Be sure to test this glaze on your clay. The glaze does not move but
application drips seem to melt flat. I have fired this glaze in my electric
kiln as well as a wood fired kiln at the Campbell Folk School. I think it
went to Cone 12 there, but results are great at Cone 9 OX.
This glaze or a derivative of it has been published in one of Lark's books
of a couple of years ago. I also combined this glaze with Binns/Tin to make
a satin matte glaze that also worked beautifully on my clay. These two
glazes have been used by me for many years with great success until CS was
not available any more. Using the new CS you would have to experiment with
it depending upon what you are looking for in a glaze.
Regards,
Bonnie Staffel

Hello Bonnie
I was a little surprised by your comment ... the recipe for the Cornwall
Stone glaze that I used many years ago before the mine shut down...
The mine is still active and CS continues to be produced! (and despite
what some may say China stone has shown long term consistency)
Kind regards,
Andrew
