glass in pots (a caution and a technique)

I've done some of the same with kids that Mel did, when helping learn to
throw pots. Showed them some with glass in the bottoms, and most of them
want it too. One awful discovery I made was, like Mel said, glass
shards. Many of them are nearly microscopic, and you find them when you
run your finger over the melted, crackled glass in the the bottom of the
pot. They hurt like heck (I'd say hell, but that's too theological) and
they're hard to pick out of the skin. You can't even see 'em, usually.

Having said all that, I've experimented with coke, wine and beer
bottles, and also those dark cobalt blue bottles you find here and
there. The coke and cobalt blue come out the best. The others are often
ugly. I don't put them in mugs, and only occasionally in a pot that is
for looking, not using.

Here's a trick for smashing glass: use an old coffee can, with a shower
cap over the top, and a small slit in the center of the shower cap. Put
the glass to be busted inside. Get a two foot piece of pipe (I use 1.5
inch diameter), put it through the slit, and smash away. Keeps the
flying pieces inside the can. A strainer can be used to size the pieces,
but they will all melt completely anyway.
