No Robin, I wouldn't touch womens issues with a ten foot pole. I'd leave
that to Superman.
this post is about shivering shinos. We have had a mild case of them the
last month or two here at our studio and a bad case of them at Sheridan. We
changed shinos to one that contained spodumene since it had been so reliable
and i didn't have to get out my list of do's and don't that i did with the
Malcolm Davis variety. all the posts i have read on Clayart have made sense
to me and now I have a long list of do's and don'ts for this one too. The
curse of a soda ash shino. Invented by a woman- Virginia Wirt!!!!
John thinks black coring- saw big shivering at school with an oxidized load.
Someone said wind- I thought damn the load I had trouble with I put outside
in the wind.
Someone mentioned iron clay sig over top- big problem at school and no
problem here.
Someone said soda ash concentration and i too had thought that so we have
started to put the batch thru a 80 mesh screen just before glazing- even an
old batch. i figured the soda ash was in need of further disbursement.
Put an iron saturate glaze over top and it shivered to rat shit.
Figured it was in big part glaze thickness and I think I'll stay firm on
that one.
So are you glaze nerds saying that if a glaze crazes it shouldn't shiver?
Very interesting, Robin! Nice to be home here at the bat cave for a weeks
reading break. So many things to get caught up on around the studio before
winter.
Cheers,
Tony

Hi Tony,

Where have you been - I've posted the problem several times on ClayArt over
the years.

Drop by sometime and I'll rub your nose in a couple of dilatometer charts
and show you how it can happen.
