toni roller at santa clara pueblo

I visited with Toni Roller at her studio in Espanola. A great lady.
Since her huband was not of Indian ancestry, she does not live on the
reservation, but actually, across the street.

Nonetheless, she and her children and her children's children are
definitely a product of their Santa Clara gene pool.

Toni and her son, Cliff, took the time to talk with me about pottery
and their firing methods. We only spent about 30 minutes, so it's not
like going to a workshop, but I asked questions and received answers.
After which I went on a shopping hunt for metal milk crates.

The Northern Pueblos are certainly worthwhile. See Toni and her
family, visit the Gonzales clan, decendents of Maria Martinez in San
Ildefenso. Go to Jimenez, Acoma, and all the others. Each one is
different. Each Pueblo is amazing. Like bringing together all the
Clayart potters and putting them into one small town. Visit everyone!

Get a book of the Pueblo families and visit them all. Bring some of
your pots with you. They all want to know what kind of work you do
before the conversation gets around to their own. There is a wariness
of potters who come looking for the family "secrets". Do your
homework. If you know something about pottery and firing, share it
first. Then, perhaps, the potter you are talking to will be willing to
share with you, too.

Been there, done that, will do it again, and again.

We spent three days there and I fired with Tony & Cliff while the kids =
ate apricots. We camped in the cliffs on the reservation. The bread and =
corn and the feast day were great and her Mom is Margret Tafoya who =
developed the neo black style with Maria Martinez!
Great places the pueblos,
karmien
