Mel: Sounds good but did you hold it for 3 hours in reduction or oxidation.
Hank reccommends holding the atmosphere under 1 on the probe- but that's for
his honkin shino. what is your probe throbbing at for 3 hours R or 0.
Whatever it is doing it has your bride happy.
Thanks a bunch!
Cheers,
Tony

we have a small alter out in the yard.
it has a picture of hank, and one of his pots.
it is sorta like Lourdes.

anyway.

the last firing i did with my christmas stuff: opened wednesday.

rhodes 32
iron red
alfred yellow
copper red.

i fired to cone 11 in nine hours. 5.5 on the oxyprobe for the entire
firing.
turned off the kiln
re/lit at 1900F
held it there for three hours.

opened the kiln.
all racers.
not one second.
red was so bright it hurt my eyes.
iron reds with crystals as big as a cats eye.
everything was even.
sharlene did not say once, `that one is a bit funny, and
could have been placed in a better place. whoo, i don't like
that glaze`, or the best yet. `melvin, have you lost all sense
of reason?` a good critic is essential...but every firing?
for 45 years.
keeps me on my toes.
and, you have one too.
and she makes pots...whowhoo, that could be painful.
anyway.
fire down.
it will change your life.
just don't do it with tenmoku under heavy reduction, or celedons.
you don't want that crystal stuff. makes it all flat. as most of you
know, blacks need air. they have to sparkle.

chinese are all oxydized, so, i never have to worry.
the crystals make all the difference.
my kiln is at 1600F. oxyprobe is a 0.0./0
have to keep it that way. my kiln loves to slide into
reduction when you are not looking.

a question????? i fire my Alpine at between 80 to 67 on the probe,, when i
start reduction at cone 010 its about 75 to 80 ,, the hotter it gets the lower
the numbers on the probe.. Its to 67 around cone 9 to 10,, I dont mess with
it,, I have NO carbon around the kiln,, i have flame out of the top peep but no
flame out of the bottom peep..i have great reduction and all the pots have good
reduction,,

Interesting how the numbers on the probe are different for different types of
kilns,,My Alpine is a updraft and im guessing that Mels kiln is a downdraft,,
Others of you using the Probe what are your numbers

Hello Mark in Chattanooga and all,
last two weeks I had great firings in my Olsen 24 updraft. The kiln is going
on 17 years old. Coated the inside about 4 years ago with ITC. All I know is
that it has extended the life of the brick. Works for me. Period. I had
heard several pros and cons about the Oxy-probe. Bought one several NCECA's
ago. Fired the kiln first time with the probe like I always do and the marks
on the damper were consistent with numbers associated with heavy reduction
according to the probe manual. So I backed off of the heavier reduction as
it climbed on past body reduction at 010. Started at 72 and would decrease
as it rose in temperature. Sucking in more secondary air. Just as Mark
observed, at cone 9, 65-67. Let the kiln do it's thing. Leave it alone. At
cone 9 pull the damper back some to around 60- 57 to cone 10 flat. Everyone
should see the iron crystals in my iron red with true imported bone ash. I
believe the bottom of the kiln where it is hotter and where I load the iron
reds gets to cone 11. Slow cooling 3 days or more. Most mass of shelves and
ware is in the bottom. I will have some photos on the Potter's Guild website
as soon as the "webmaster" gets around to it. My She-nos, incredible stuff!
Got a few digital photos on hand now to send you but you have to contact me
off Clayart list to get them sent to you. I have my camera ready to go at
the Texas Clay Festival. Set my booth up this morning, then hear on the news
that there is a flash flood watch out tonight. Great. I should be OK. As I
was leaving the site, in comes David Hendley in his red Honda and red
trailer. Watching David back the trailer into a small space I know he didn't
get his driver license at K-Mart. Also blowing in was Randy Brodnax. Propane
cylinder secured on the tail gate of his red pick um up. No one is going to
tail gate him. I have a Gary Hatcher piece on reserve. Letta me tella you
that the rest of the participants have some mind boggling work on display.
Phil May has been doing his homework! Mary Fisher, if you want a piece of
hers you'd better arrive early. Lisa Orr, Dee Buck, you know what I am
talking about. You can feel the friendship amongst the group as everyone
comes together for the weekend. Big group dinner tomorrow evening. I am not
allowed to tell you what will most likely go on. Just Texans at
