There was an article in the October 2002 (I think) Ceramics Monthly about this subject. I have mixed up some test batches but have not yet fired them. In the pics accompanying the article the glazes are very nice.

If you're not opposed to commercial glazes, AMACO has a nice line of
fake ash glazes called the Pompeian Ash series. Colors are Black, Buff,
Blue, Brown, Tan & Green (Green only bears a cautionary label, others
are AP Non-toxic) Retail prices range from $6.80-$10.80 I think
Tucker's is an AMACO distributor, so you might check there and see if
they have any feedback on how the glazes perform on their bodies.
Good luck!

I have tried the blue Amaco Pomp Glaze. If you put it on thick it =
bubbles and has air pockets. You have to use it very thin and then you =
get a very dry type ash glaze. My experience. I was not impressed with =
it. Others may have a difference experience.

Just try adding ashes to any glaze you already have that you dont mind
taking a chance with. Even a handful of unwashed ashes can change the
quality of a glaze.

I also tried it and it did not work. I thought I did not have it on thick
enough but sounds like that would creat another problem. It is so frustrating
to see the gorgeous test tiles at NCECA and then come home and try it and have
the results come out so poorly.

I have had mixed results, I purchased a variety of the
colors. Application is everything. But you still get
the bubbles sometimes and refiring even with more
glaze doesn't always work.

I need to chime in and say that I have also tried Amaco Pomp Ash, the tan
one, and have had no problem with it at all.
