It is time to gather suggestions for workshop presenters again. We are =
working on the lineup for summer 2006, and I would greatly appreciate =
your suggestions. Who are your favorite well-known workshop presenters? =
Please send suggestions only for well-known mainstream people. We are =
out there in the wilderness, and we are not one of the best known =
workshop venues, so we need people who really draw. I would greatly =
appreciate any help you can give. You can answer this on or off list.
Thanks -=20

She may not be well-known enough, but Linda McFarling of NC does a really
nice job -- I spent a week in a workshop with her in Asheville at Odyssey.

Vince, the first time I taught at your place, my assistants were Steve
Robison and Kathy Guss, who, as you well know, have between them been
residents or assistants at virtually all of the major big-name crafts
schools in this country, over the course of many years. Steve, especially,
has been around these workshop centers and seen damn near everybody who
gives workshops.
So I asked them once, "Who gives the best workshop you've ever seen?", and
they agreed, with no hesitation or consultation with each other- hands down,
no contest, not even close- Bill Daley.

The best workshop I ever attended was done by Linda Christianson. She is personable, warm, and makes you rethink your approach to clay. She has so much to share, and will make any student want more! ! Mary K.

I just spent two days at a workshop by Barbara Knutson, sponsored by the
Miami Ceramic League. Barbara did a fabulous workship - one day of
demonstration, with the second day hands one. I loved it, learned lots,
tried new techniques, was inspired and Barbara was great! I'd recommend her
workshops and will certainly attend another workshop by Barbara. (I'm sorry
that I was not able to attend her slide presentation on Saturday evening)

My absolute all-time favorite mainstream workshop leader is Jeff Oestreich.I learned tremendous amounts, and he's a master of group dynamics. Iattended w-shops at the 92nd St Y and for 2 1/2 weeks at Penland, andcame away dazed, ecstatic. Eddie Dominguez

Jennifer, whose first workshop was given by Daniel Rhodes! I don't
remember a thing.....must be getting old....Also took one with
Marguerite Wildenhein. She was fierce, but nice to me cuz I was 6
months pregnant. She refused to believe spray bottles were a good
thing..new fangled.

I go to few workshops, but I did go to a Lana Wilson workshop a year or so
ago, and loved it. She is a hand builder. I do little of that, but she
helped me enhance my work with wonderful touches I would not have thought
of. She is really fun as a presenter, and totally original.

She gets my vote, anytime. Rikki

I would have to give my vote to Trudy Golley.

When I last spoke with her she was teaching at Red Deer College
here in Alberta Canada.

Her work is inspiring and she is a great presenter, clear concise
and she makes some very difficult techniques easy to
implement in a small studio.

I attended a one day workshop a few years ago when she
was here in our town and highly recommend her.

My sincere thanks to everyone who has sent me such useful information about
workshop presenters. This is going to be of tremendous help to me. I'd
love to respond to each of you separately, but I hope you will accept my
thanks via Clayart. And to anyone else who has suggestions, please keep 'em
coming!

Dear Vince,

I have been working with our Crooked Tree Arts Center which has renovated
the old building making their teaching studios right up to the minute with
space and equipment as well as beautiful galleries. We are also considered
the "boonies" when it comes to having access to mainstream presenters. My
method of exploring for someone who would be a great draw was by looking at
websites that pop up in Clayart posts. The Jordan River Art Center nearby
had Dick Lehman a couple of years ago who we would recommend highly. I
finally got in touch with Brian Gartside (http://www.gartside.info) who
lives in New Zealand, and his repertoire covered several subjects where I
felt the potters would benefit from his presentation. The CTAC is working
out the details with him for a workshop next May.

Here are a few of the presenters that I found very interesting FYI:

Randy Johnston http://www.uwrf.edu/art/faculty/Johnston/welcome.html
Hayne Bayless http://www.sidewaysstudio.com/pottery.html
Sandi Pierantozzi http://www.claytimes.com/Pierantozzi.htm
Nick Joerling, Penland http://www.redstarstudios.org/
Lana Wilson http://www.lanawilson.com/Lana1/

Perhaps you have had some of these artists already but am just passing along
the results of my research. The CTAC is planning on reaching out in a
similar manner as you because we seem to live too far from the metropolitan
centers such as Detroit/Lansing who present workshops that our potters would
enjoy. We have a lot of terrific potters in Northern Michigan as shown in
an exhibition now being presented at the Jordan River Art Center where
several interior decorators chose works from the area artists showcasing
their work in a "home" environment. Beautiful show and the reception was
packed. Another reception will be held next week for the artists and
designers. Each decorator chose a room of a home to furnish with the art
works, and they accomplished this by the use of hanging panels designed to
separate the different rooms.

Hope this helps.
