Being one of those who lives with allergies and whose Dr. shakes his head and says , "WHY ART?"- because we are all exposed to sooo many things, I empathize with you-had SERIOUS reaction to cedar chips(was doing doggie beds) and wound up with swollen face, hands, eyes, and huge raised blistered welts where I scratched on places all over we won't mention.....Took three months to completely get over looking like creature from Black Lagoon.
Anyway, mentioned to hubby who is engineer/math/physics/chem person and he says that it sounds like you have a contamination of the clay with some other substance. If you have an allergy to grasses, mold, etc, could have contributed but doubts it could have been just an organic. Thinks something could have gotten on or in clay accidently.
The thought occurred to me that if you have a University nearby, it might behoove you to go to the Environmental/Science Dept. where they could possibly analyze clay sample for you. This is a serivce in which they analyze soil for people in industry/agriculture. Also your local county/state health dept might be a route to go. I know here the county extension agents do soil analysis-see if you could go that route. There could be a fee, depending on the agency for this, but with that bad a reaction, I would want to know to see if this is an isolated incident or if there is something that could be cross contaminated.
Hope this helps,
