Anne, I haven't read all of the posts concerning asbestos gloves,
but, the ones I have read have been too diplomatic on this one. Using
asbestos gloves is questionable at best. You have been given excellent
council by a number of folks. To ignore what is being said, for whatever
reason, is foolish..
As previously mentioned contact either Mark Ward at Ward Burner
Systems or your local pottery or foundry supply store for the type of
gloves that will suit your needs. If you are looking to "glad hand" the
pots then you might try using the elbow length kevlar gloves for primary
protection and take a pair of old leather gloves that you hold in the
palms of the Kevlar gloves while gripping the pots. This has worked for
me in the past when I did the same thing, though after a short time I
discovered that a well designed pair of tongs for specific forms are
most definitely the way to go.
Here is the link to Mark Wards site.
http://www.wardburner.com/protective.cfm Call him and speak to him.
His knowledge base concerning burners, protective clothing, kilns, etc.,
is quite extensive. He is very forth coming with information.. They have
some new gloves that I did not know about that reportedly have a contact
heat protection rating of 2000 F. They are a bit pricey but would work
exceptionally well if I am understanding your needs correctly. They're
made of a product called "Zetex."
Hope this helps
