another mason stain question

Thinking like a painter here again...is it possible to MIX Mason stains to
get an effect/color you want? Just called KC Metro, and they're a bit low
at the moment...I ordered 6407 (Marigold) and 6464 (Zirconium), the only two
yellow family members they have at the moment..

One of the ones I borrowed from Keith was 6107, Dark Golden--it looks a much
lighter color than on the Mason stains chart on the website, at least on my
monitor. The supplier didn't have any more of that, and I just have a tiny
sample bag.

What I'm wondering is, if I need to, can I mix one of the above yellows with
a little 126 (Hazelnut), which there is rather a lot of, just to make it
more amber than yellow?

I feel like a Big Girl now, just ordered frit and Bentonite.

Thank you for all your help...

Best--
Kate

In a word, yes. But as in all things ceramic, there are exceptions. I have
noticed that whenever I've tried mixing any other colorant with one of the
cadmium inclusion (red, orange or yellow) stains, it kills the color. But
most stains can be mixed with other stains, and with regular oxide
colorants, as well.

Yes Kate:that is possible

The only problem with the mixing is that you cannot really see the color
until after you fire it, But if you do it systematically 1:1 1:2 1:3 and so
on an fire a test tile with that , then you can find the color you want.

Good luck

Kate,
Mason puts out a color chart and reference guide. I refer to it
whenever I use the stains. It cost me $5.95 and is well worth it. I have
mixed some colors with no problems yet, but I do refer to the guide.
They also have a web site that you can contact. Hope you find this
helpful. Donna
