darkening clay body

After many, many years I'm getting back to my first love, pottery. In =
several pots I like to allow the clay body itself to show through =
contrasting against a glaze. Years ago I used what I remember was a =
common item usually found in a medicine chest to darken the clay itself. =
I thought it may be sodium bicarbonate, but tests proved me wrong.
Does anybody out there have any idea of what I'm talking about? =20
