Saskatoon....Firing?.....First my dear, you are going to need to plug in your car every time you leave it, just to keep it from freezing! They have these plug ins just for that..... Saskatoon....hmm...where every breath you expel in January becomes an instant ice scuplture....but you are going to love Nanaimo...the scenery is incomparable....the ferry ride from the mainland will make you swoon....good luck! Lotsa good potters on the island.....Mary K

Hi Sue,
Well, I'd say January in Saskatoon is going to be pretty cool!! It's a
great city though. I live on Denman Island. The ferry is about an hour
north of Nanaimo. There are a ton of potters all over Vancouver Island
and the gulf islands. There is a Nanaimo Potters Guild as well as the
Tozan Society (www.tozan.bc.ca). Anyone can join in on the Tozan
firings. It is a great opportunity with a very interesting crowd.
Unfortunately the tozan site is being reclaimed by Malaspina University
and the kiln will have to be moved in 2006 but plans are to keep firing
through 2005. Arrowsmith Potters Guild in Parksville is very active as
is the Comox Valley Potters Guild in Courtenay. If you will be here in
early July there are world class workshops in Metchosin. Check out the
website www.missa.ca. If you want to contact me I will help put you in
touch. And don't forget to visit the potters on Denman and Hornby Islands!!
All the best, Janet, on a grey rainy morning jealous of you living in shorts

"Saskatoon....Firing?.....First my dear, you are going to need to plug in

(Chuckle) Mary,
We've lived in Saskatoon for two years, including last January when the temp
was a *planet* low of minus 83F. And both cars have the proverbial plug
hanging out the front grill. That gets a lot of looks here in central Fla!
I've also been to Nanaimo and understand that there is a community clay
studio down by the ferry docks. Does this sound right? I don't recall seeing
the thing, but I've heard it's there. I just need a place to fire until I
can get my own kiln and get set up. As far as firing in Saskatchewan, there
is a multitude of talent in that fair province! Charley Ferrero, Anita
Rocamora, Mel Bolen, Melvyn Malkin and many others. Wonder if it's the
warmth of the kilns that was the main attraction at first?
Sue
Thankful that it's now in the 70's!

Sue - Get in touch with Barb Stachan at the Arrowsmith Potters Guild in
Parksville B.C. This is a great little Guild with lots of active members in
North Nanaimo. The Phone at the Guild is (250)9541872 and you can reach
Barb by computer at ken-strachan@shaw.ca
We have 8 wheels, 2 elelcric kilns, a raku kiln, slab roller and extruder.
We also have some great worktables.
Look forward to seeing you.
