Hi:

I use metal pipe on 2 different kilns. I'll tell you about the salt kiln
because, if I'm remembering correctly, that was the subject.

I have a 16 foot stack on the salt kiln. The first six feet is mortared
hardbrick. Above that I have a 10" ID pipe that is heavy galvanized
steel. It's basically a piece of 10 inch culvert and it was only $50
bucks. I lined the culvert with kaowool sleeves, that are actually called
"m" board sleeves. I sprayed them with ITC and mortared all the joints
with high alumina mortar. This stack has been chugging along for about 5
years and it's doing well. Absolutely no discoloration or deterioration
from heat.
