Hi Brian,

One that I recommend above all others (and I have an awful lot of
books about tiles!) is anything by Frank Giorgini - the copy I have is
'Handmade Tiles' by David and Charles, but there is a newer edition
published by Lark Books. Not only is it technically the best book I've
found on making tiles, it is full of inspiration and images of
contemporary tile makers as well as having a good introduction with
the historic background & designs.

Otherwise, have a look at a book called "Traditional Dutch Tile
Designs" published by the Pepin Press, based in Holland. This square
format paperback covers delft & majolica patterns but also has a CD in
the back of the images ready to use, print, display, incorporate into
teaching notes etc. I picked up a copy in Amsterdam recently but you
can find the publishing company here:

http://www.pepinpress.com/

They have a downloadable PDF catalogue with all of their other design
books in, it is a large 18Mg file which took a while to download even
using a broadband connection, but I'm sure they can tell you where to
get hold of a copy and they also have a lot of other useful looking
teaching material.

For earlier tiles, try 'English Tilers' by Elizabeth Eames, published
by the British Museum. A small square format paperback, I think it is
out of print but you can find secondhand copies using amazon or
www.addall.com. It is a good intro to medieval encaustic tiles and was
what got me started making replica medieval tiles, the designs are
almost full size.

Enjoy!

Brian,

I second the recommendation of Frank Giorgini's Handmade Tiles. I think it
has just the right mix of mostly inspiring photos and technical information
that you need for a class.

If you can't find a copy down there, let me know and I'll loan you
mine...shouldn't take too long to get it to you.

Judy

P.S. Are you coming to the US in 2005?

You can't go wrong with Frank Giorgini's "Handmade Tiles",
it is very complete and a great place to start.

Brian:

My wife just got me a copy of "Handmade TIles" by
Frank Giorgini at our local library book sale. I love it!
It's published by Lark, 1994, ISBN 0-937274-76-3.
Lots of hands-on how-to stuff along with history and
plenty of illustrations. My only (minor) complaint is
that many of the illustrations just give the artist, title,
and size, without technique details, so you are
often not sure how the technique relates to the one
being discussed in the text (which has its own series
of clear illustrations.) But it's great for inspiration!

Best regards,

Brain,
There are a couple of other books that I recommend my students to look
at also, along side of the fore mentioned Giorgini book. I have my
students look at Geometric Symmetry in Patterns and Tilings by Claire
E. Horne, Principles in Three dimensional Designs, by Wucious Wong and
all the quilt design books they can get their hands on. The Wong book
has great shapes that can be used for modular designs.

So everyone has already recommended Giorgini's book to you, and I would
concur. It's definitely one of the best. Definitely get that one. If
you already have it, or have access to it, OR if you can afford 2 books,
you might also like:
Ceramic Art Tile for the Home, by DeBorah Goletz (retail price $29.95,
Schiffer Publications)- it's full of tons of pictures and ideas, which
would be a great inspiration for your students. Not a lot of actual
text or how-to.
The Tile: Making, Designing, Using by Kenneth Clark (retail $40.00,
Crowood Press Ltd.) - Fairly new book, quite popular. Discusses
history, designing, glazing, methods, other decorating techniques,
using, fixing and other problems. 280 color photos, 176 pages
Handcrafted Ceramic Tiles by Fanning and Jones (retail $17.95, Sterling
Publishing Co.) discusses decoration, making tiles, working with tiles.
Includes 25 original projects for making and decorating tiles,
Information on materials and equipment, practical advice on planning,
decorative schemes, and tiling surfaces and more. 144 pages
The Art of Handmade Tile by Kristen Peck (retail 21.95, Krause
Publications) Guides you through designing, firing, and decorating your
own custom-made tiles. Teaches how to choose the right clay, carve or
sculpt, create a plaster mold, bisque fire, decorate, using a variety of
techniques

We have a category on our website devoted entirely to tile and mosaic
books, you might want to check that out for cover pictures and
descriptions. The link is http://www.brackers.com/store/results.cfm?cat=634
I don't know how readily available pottery books are in your area, Check
with your regular supplier to see if they have access to any of these.
If not, there are many US suppliers (including us) that ship
internationally. A book or two can be put into a Global Priority Mail
Flat rate envelope and shipped to New Zealand for $10.00-ish.
Good luck!
Cindy

Clayart readers...
I am teaching visual design and decoration for a tile workshop in the
summer workshop in January and want to buy a good Tile book to use
for reference for the students.
I know that I saw a good one at an early nineties NCECA which was
published in the USA but do not recall the author or title. I am
quite keen to have a good historical survey and many illustrations

Any help would be really appreciated

Brian,
Have a look for
Islam El-Said & Ayse Parman. "Geometric Concepts in Islamic Art" ISBN
0-905035-03-8. 1976.
Wucius Wong published two books. Get the 2D one as well, this is
better for Plane Spatial Division.
Best regards,

Making & Installing Handmade Tiles by Angelica Pozo (Lark Books) will be available
April, 2005. Big, bright, how-to photographs from slab to finished piece. Lots of info
on surface decoration, bullnoses, firing, plus a half-dozen or so projects showing
installations (indoor and out) of varying complexity, from a single tile to an entire
kitchen (including how to use blueprints). Angelica's long experience fills the book
with real-world info, and her cheerful writing style makes it an entertaining read.

Brian, you need to check with Steve Branfman to see if he has the book you
want. It's his annual sale, with 25% discount through the end of January.
