Hi Clayart,
I've been away and back and away again and meantime, lost the clayart
'habit'. But, I thought someone might be interested to see the following
test I did ages ago:

Back on April 1, Ron Roy posted his revision for Randy's Red without GB.
Here's what he wrote, in part:

"Don't use it without the red iron as it will have too low an expansion.
Looks like this is not going to do very well in a dishwasher - and you
better at least do the lemon test if you are going to use it as a liner on
functional ware."

Frit 3134 - 22.5
Frit 3195 - 19.0
Talc - 20.0
F4 - 5.0
EPK - 10.0
Silica - 23.5
Total - 100.0

Red iron oxide - 15.0

I tested this using Fusion Frit 12 instead of FF 3134, and Fusion Frit 2
instead of 3195 and I changed the recipe using GlazeMaster to keep very very
close to Ron's revision. Anyway, I tested it on Tuckers Mid Red, Smooth
White and a blend of these two. I fired the tests up to ^6 and let the kiln
cool to 1037C and then fire down at 50C/hour until 760C.

This glaze loves texture. It breaks deep brown, black, deep mustard and
has tiny red crystals running through it's varigations. (The Smooth White
test has no red crystals. Could be because the other two clays contain iron
which brings out the crystals. I am speculating here.))

Update:
I did the glaze tests in May and lost them in the shuffle until last week.
I put them in a ^05 bisque firing. They changed to become deep deep red
breaking brown on the Mid-Red and the blend of Mid-red and Smooth White. (I
didn't refire the Smooth white sample.)

I haven't done either lemon wedges or dishwashing tests. Much as I love the
iron reds and others in the orangey, brown family, my customers DO NOT. I
guess they look outside, see mostly tan, and then make a beeline for the
cool colors of blue and green.

Best regards,
Carol
