Thanks to Julie at Standard.
We talked it out and came up with the solution.
Turns out that firing on grog was the problem. The grog was retaining
heat and creating hot spots under the tile and splitting them.
Julie assured me that there is no need to worry about friction with
the body i'm using.
I havent had one crack since eliminating the grog
