matt,
its always a debate about mortar or not mortar, marcia, do not get offended but when you say no to an acutal setting mortar but say yes to possibly using a fireclay mortar i do not see the rationale? i do think that a large amount of the fixed bricks in a mortared kiln break their seal when fired, and fireclay only level out brick and with a flat top leveling means a vertical leveling if you can see what i am sayin? it makes the decision even more difficult, I would say if you have the money buy 3 gallons of sairset or hi mull from mt savage refractories(my personal favorite) and go ahead and mortar the roof, i do not reccomend a fireclay mortar in the ceiling cause it will drop down on your pots when dried and fired. I think in the end you could just lay it with the brick the way they are and not worry about it, its used and the life of the kiln is only going to be 10 years at the least anyhow and it will have payed for itself by then so dont worry about it.'
