"Richard Mahaffey" asked:
It is funny that the making cone idea came up. I was talking to a
student who did he first solo kiln firing the other day and talked about
cones and the formulas and how if you make the same unity formula from
different materials the result will differ greatly.
I know that I have the info somewhere, I think, but I do not know where.
Does anyone know where to point me to find the formulas for Orton cones,
especially cone 4, 5 and 6? ( I checked the Clayart archives and found
only Seger formulas).
Thanks,
Rick
Hay Rick And Crew,
The reference I recall is the potter made cones out of:
1. The clay body
2. Body + 5% wood ash
3. Body + 10% ash
4. Body + 15% ash
5. Maybe body + 20%
This allowed him to determine boby vitrification.
That plus draw tiles is what I think the old guys down south used. Hope
that helps.
Gotta go, Mary Hayes just invited me to dinner at Peter's house. She
invited him to her house but some how he thinks he won't go to heaven if
he steps foot in her house. Amazing what some people think will
determine determine their after life.
Enjoy the Holidays, be safe and stay in there!

Seger Formulae for cones are well known but their recipes seem to go
unpublished. No need to wonder why.
Yes, it is possible to construct the same Unity formula of a specific
cone from a variety of ingredients. These can be tested against
standard cones. It would be a miracle if all examples bent to exactly
the same degree in the same time frame during the same firing.

Ivor Lewis.

Hello all,
If I recall correctly, Pottery Supply House in Toronto, Canada made its own
cones;
that was quite many years ago.
So, it is feasible.

David Green's book "Pottery Glazes" (I think) is about how glazes are =20=
formulated but starts with a descritpion of how cone recipes were first =20=
formulated.
