bringle slip

I have a high school student working with me who was intrigued about being
able to use Bringle's slip on wet, dry and bisque pottery. I did some
testing maybe a year ago and pulled up my computer file but to my chagrin
found that I have two formulas for Bringle's Slip that I have saved from
Clayart discussions. They are identical except that one uses the Nepheline
Syenite and the other custer spar. I forget which one I used. I will be
using them at cone 6. I suspect both would be fine but that maybe the one
using Neph sy would be best at cone 6; am I correct?

#-1

Neph Sy 25

Kaolin 20

Ball 20

Flint 30

Borax 5

#-2

Borax 5

Custer spar 25

EPK 20

Ball Clay 20

Silica 30

Tom, I replied to this last night but it didn't get posted, so I'm replying
off-list, too, this time. Yes, the Bringle Slip version with the Nepheline
Syenite is the one intended for ^6 and the one with Custer Spar is for ^10.
I've used both. They can both be used at lower temperatures, but that works
best if there is glaze over them. I do slip decorating with no glaze at ^6,
and the colors work much better with the ^6 slip than they would with the
^10, because the ^6 slip is more vitreous at that temperature.

I've used the slips mainly on leather hard clay but do use the ^6 on 1"
bisqued pieces with stamped images (which become refrigeratoer magnets),
brushing it on into the recesses and then wiping it off on the high spots.
It works fine, but I haven't tried it on large areas of clay. Let us know
how well it works and whether it helps to moisten the clay first, etc.
(which I usually don't do on the small pieces.)
