porcelain! A committee in England, I heard today on NR, has determined that
the most influential art piece of the 20th century was Marcel Duchamps' "The
Fountain", a urinal that he had hung on the wall and declared to be art,
just because he said it was.
Notice they did not say it was the best, just the most influential, because
if marked the beginning of idea that art was anything an artist said it was.
They did not say whether this was a positive development in the history of
art or not, but it sure did change things.

The Fountain was signed "R. Mutt". Duchamps was fond of pseudonyms--his
more famous one was "Rrrose Selavie". Art scholars, please correct my
spelling. The Fountain, along with Meret Openheim's fur-lined teacup
are icons of Dada.

Phillip -
I am a fellow Duchamp fan. The psuedonym "Rrose Selavy" (2 "r"s, not 3) was
reserved for his fairly frequent appearances in drag, at parties and art
events. I am not aware that he ever signed his work with this pseudonym (Is
that correct?), whereas "R. Mutt" did appear on some of his artwork in
addition to "Fountain." Have you seen Arneson's portrait of Duchamp as
"Rrose Selavy?" It is pretty fine.
Best wishes -
- Vince
