needing help after e-mail crash with mozilla

Ian, sorry to hear of your computer tragedy!!

It's a bit late now, but have you a copy of Mozilla Backup v1.3.2?? This
is a backup utility specifically for Mozilla.

If not, be sure you get a copy. Most excellent. Specifically designed
to provide backups of both Mozilla Browser (Firefox) and Mozilla E-mail
(Thunderbird) MozBackup is the only program I have ever seen that had a
specific backup scenario for both browser and e-mail. I had to use mine
not very long ago to restore all my browser and e-mail data. I have
never seen any other browser or e-amail program that had a backup
utility, although they may well be out there.

The copy I have runs on a Windoze machine, so you will need to find a
copy somewhere for a Mac.

I use neither Mozilla or Macs, but have you looked into the support
resources on Mozilla's web site?

http://www.mozilla.org/support/

I just checked one of the news groups they suggested (alt.fan.mozilla) and
found almost 8000 messages!

I back up my Outlook Express emails, address book, and settings about once a
month to an external hard drive. It takes only a moment. I would imagine
other email systems all have a way to make a backup, either through a
utility such as the one John mentioned, or by copying from a subdirectory.

Arnold
Would you go through an explanation of how you do your Outlet Express =
backup please?
I thought I was backing up mine until my brand new computer crashed =
three weeks after I got it. I inserted the backup CD and there it was, =
Outlook express, and all the folders. Except the folders were empty.
Nothing had been recorded - or nothing that I could open anyway. There =
was certainly a large amount of space used if they were really empty. I =
went to the computer store and asked them what I should have done and =
they told me that copying Outlook Files was a big problem ( and bring =
it in they'd see what they could do :-=DE
I would appreciate the help.

Greetings all

I've had an e-mail disaster which lost 18 months of e-mails and most of
my e-mail addresses, so I am now re-contacting friends. I am still
trying to recover it from my back-up discs but it seems it was not
backing up my e-mail documents.

So I'm sending out a general call to friends to drop me a message
(off-list)... if you've not heard from me for a while I may have lost
your e-mail address in the crash. I have just reset my Clayart
subscription to receive mail, and as a result have managed to contact
several friends already. Thankyou Clayart!

If anyone can enlighten me about what happened with my e-mail files in
Mozilla for Mac, I would be most grateful. I was trying to send an
e-mail and suddenly all the folders disappeared leaving me with an empty
window of Mozilla.

Regards

Would you go through an explanation of how you do your Outlet Express backup
please?
I thought I was backing up mine until my brand new computer crashed three
weeks after I got it. I inserted the backup CD and there it was, Outlook
express, and all the folders. Except the folders were empty.
-------------------------------

To save Outlook Express email, you
have to save 3 items: the emails, the email settings, and the address
book:

1) Backup Emails

On the Tools menu, click Options.

On the Maintenance tab, click Store Folder.

Select (highlight) the folder location. Press Ctrl/C to copy the location.

Click Cancel, and click cancel again to close the dialogue box.

Click Start (in Windows), and click Run.

With the cursor in the open box, click Ctrl/V. This will insert the location
of the
email folder.

Click OK.

You will go to that folder.

In the Edit menu, click Select All.

In the Edit menu, click Copy. Then close the window.

Make a new folder for backing up your email. (You might label it Email
Backups.)

Open the new folder.

In the Edit menu, select Paste.

Your Outlook Express emails are now backed up. You could save this backup
folder to a CD.

2) Backup Mail Account
On the Tools menu in Outlook Express, click Accounts.

On the Mail tab, click the mail account that you want to export. Then
click Export.

In the Save in box, locate the Mail Backup folder that you made in step
1 above. Then click Save.

Click Close.

3) Backup Address Book
In Outlook Express, in the File menu, click Export, then click Address
Book.

Click Text File (Comma Separated Values), and then click Export.

Click Browse.

Locate the mail backup folder that you made in step 1 above.

In the File Name box, type Address Book Backup, then click Save.

Click Next.

Select the files you want to export. Click Finish.

Click OK.

Arnold
Thank you !
I really had given up on saving email addresses, folders everything.

And now I have them saved on a CD and thanks to you I will not have to =
re enter my mailing list yet again after the next crash.

( I had a hard copy but had to type it back in)

Your help is very much appreciated!

Ian, all may not be lost! Though please don't get too many hopes up.
You may have simply lost your Netscape "Identity."

Please read this whole email as you can probably skip 1 and 2 and go
directly to 3b, print that out and and follow it. But I left the 1-3
"process" in as that might be useful to know or see. It's all very
concrete, follow the steps, read top to bottom, left to right.

1. As your "user agent" is "Mozilla Thunderbird 0.9," I'm guessing you
lost your Thunderbird Mail settings. Thunderbird is an OS X only
application and stores its preferences in your User Library folder. Go
to your User name "Home," then "Library." "Thunderbird" should be on
the top level of the directory. Inside that folder is an "Application
Registry" which can become corrupt occasionally, especially as 0.9 was
a beta only application, and would make it appear to lose your
identity. Those IDs are stored in the "Profiles" folder. If you have
more than one, you're probably okay, if not... that's really tough to
lose so much valuable email. Maybe you have the Library folder on a
backup somewhere though but didn't know where to look.

2. Try going to Tools... Account Settings... You may still have an
account registered but it may not be active.

3. You can also go to http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewforum.php?f=39
I did a search on "lost email" and it brought me to
_Disappearing_mail> "Thunderbird : Issues : Disappearing mail" on the
Mozilla Knowledgebase, which has some very useful suggestions. If you
find you need to run Profile Manager as in 3b, it's a little "new"
using the Terminal if you haven't done so before.

Or call/write me and I'll try walking you through it! 18 months is a
long time.

Kathy

Hi Kathy

Thankyou for the detailed reply and all the trouble you have gone to...
and the offer of walking me through it! You are so kind.

Yours is the most likely looking suggestion I have got, though I need to
find it is relevant to the program I was using. True I am now using
Thunderbird, but then I was using the whole Mozilla package.

I went to http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewforum.php?f=39 and that
seems to have lots of relevant stuff. I may have to get Hamish my
computer savvy son to help me with it... but meanwhile I will also go
through your 1. and 2. to see what it brings up. This suggests to me
that it should at least be on one of my backup discs.

Thanks again, and if you need help with your glazes perhaps I can help! :)

Warm regards

Ian

My problem is a little off of the Mozilla topic, but it concerns the
situation that I cannot send an email to Cat or other friends with an AOL
address ever since I changed my email to Microsoft Outlook. I previously
had Outlook Express but it would not include my attachments to AOL
addresses.

Is my problem with AOL or is it my sender? Anyone know how to fix this? I
am on cable.

Thanks, Bonnie Staffel

It must be the AOL account you are trying to send the attachment to. I
tried to send a small simple jpeg picture to my sister who has AOL and
she didn't see any picture! I sent the same email to my daughter who
has a .mac account and she saw it just fine. I bet the AOL default
security settings don't allow attachments....
