Hi!
I know little or nothing compared to everyone else who contributes to this
group, however I also have a little Skutt 609. I have noticed that mine
makes a bit of noise on low and medium when I have the lid propped open. I
don't hear any buzzing when it is on high with the lid shut. I don't know
if we have the same buzz, but I've used mine quite a bit for a year or so
and it still works great!
If you find out that the buzzing actually means my kiln is up to no good,
please let me know. So far we have been getting along fairly well together.
Also, if you find out that buzzing is "really bad", please keep in mind
that I really do know little or nothing.

A gentle buzzing sound from a kiln is reassuring, because it means the
elements are firing normally. On a kiln that uses relays, such as digital
kilns, a louder chattering, buzzing noise usually means a relay is about to
fail. An infinite control switch that pops is also about to fail. It's
important to observe the sounds of a kiln so that you can recognize when
something is wrong.
Machines tell us a lot by the noises they make. A good mechanic can tell
what is wrong with an engine just by listening. I once had a VW bug that had
a rod knock. That was 30 years ago, but even today I could still recognize
the sound of a VW's "death rattle."
