This is a reply I wrote for an Artista question I was asked offline... I thought I post it here too for future reference and to ask a quick question.
On top of what do you place you artista to throw? Also, have you had any problems leveling the wheel? I've tried several table which are ok for throwing small stuff but wobbly when centering 10#+. I tried cinder blocks but have proven hard to level... Any tips suggestions?
thanks in advance...

Hi..I came across your postings on clayart regarding an Artista wheel. Did
you end up getting one? If so, how is it? Did you get the footpedal?
Thanks.

The main reason I bought the Artista was because I live outside the US (things need to be arishipped here even heavy ones...) and shipping for a regular wheel was twice as much for the lighter ones and 4x more for the kickwheel which was what I really wanted... Also, I spent three months looking for a used wheel here to no avail...
I paid $330 for mine plus shipping... which I think is fair $ for it. BUT, I would have taken a used shimpo or brent over it in a heartbeat but there weren't any available in my area. Check the axner m series. We use them at school and they seem to be pretty good for the money... Brent’s EI model is affordable too...
The only big plus of the artista is it's portability... because unless you are going to use a sturdy (and read STURDY) you already have or you need the space when not using it you might as well get the clayboss, the axner, brent, etc... I didn't get the pedal as I don't change speed all that much. I throw slow like in a kickwheel... The Hand dialer at least on mine, which btw sometimes I think might not be working properly, is not very precise but one gets used to it. I can also hear a faint clacking sound after centering 10# of clay but I don't know if it's coming from the motor's belt of simply from me applying pressure on the splash pan... After a while the sound goes away... Even though is stalls a bit when centering 15#+ at slow speeds (Which I guess is normal for a 1/3hp motor) it can handle it ok… I agree with what other people have said, you should get another wheel for heavy production but the artista should do fine for a weekend warrior with limited space or for
demonstrations… which is for what I plan to use it in the future, if it withstands the heavy use I'm giving it, when I come up with enough money to buy a pro wheel…
You should ask this question on Clayart I got at least five responses from people who own them….
take care
