My older CXC brent wheel's foot pedal isn't working to control the
speed. I
took the bottom cover off the foot pedeal to see if the speed
controls slipped,
but adjusting the high and low doesn't affect the speed, which right
now is
one speed - full bore!
I can't find a Brent web site. Does anyone have a phone number or
email
address for Brent? Also, has anyone else had these problem, and if
so, was it a
problem in the pedal or the control box and how was it resolved?

Thanks!

Morning June: I have a 30 plus year old CXC. Approximately, 12-15yrs ago I
was having problems with speed control. Went through a number of attempts
with replacement parts with no sucess. Installed a Soldner foot pedal and
it has worked perfectly since then. Seemed like an expensive solution at the
time. Considering the mileage I have gotten from the choice it was not
expensive afterall. All that is needed is to put a plug end on the motor
wire. MarjB (if you wish I could dig through old files and get you
specifics on what model etc I bought)

It's possible the arm is broken: This is a white or black plastic part
that attaches to the bolt. At the end of this are 2 teeth - see if
they're both still present. You can order it through this link:
http://www.brackers.com/store/results_detail.cfm?cat=455&prodid=BRARMFOOTPED
AND/OR
The Electric Assembly needs to be replaced: Immediately beneath the red
and black dials, there is a black post (also plastic) with a plastic
slider sticking out of it. This is what the teeth on the arm move. If
this slider is broken, replace the entire Electric Assembly. That can
be ordered through this link:

Feel free to call David, our repair tech, if you are unsure. Toll-free
number is (888) 822-1982.

Hi June,
It sounds like the circuit board in the switch box needs to be replaced.
the part cost me $50.00 when I replaced mine, but that was quite a while
ago

Marj,

I already have a plug installed on the Brent, that I could plug another pedal
into if it came with a male end.
In the mid 80's when I was building my wood kiln, Tom Collins, who was
constructing my design for me, was trying to convince me to switch to the Soldner
pedal, so he put that plug on the Brent wheel and plugged in his foot pedal, but
I didn't see enough difference in the two pedals to warrant buying another
one since the one on the Brent was working fine.
The possible problem that I might face if I went out and bought the Soldner
foot pedal, is that it may not work if the problem is the circuit board in the
box and not the pedal. Just a thought.
Considering that this kiln was purchased in the early/mid 80's, and the only
other thing I've had to repair until now, was the head assembly (about 2 years
ago), I feel I've really gotten my moneys worth. :-)
I have another Brent at my studio here at home and from what I've from other
Clayarters about some problems being reported with the newer Brents, I
definitely want to fix this older work horse! It doesn't have a reverse switch
like the newer one but I have yet to use it even though I thought it would be
good to trim in reverse. Old habits die hard! LOL

Warmest regards,
June

Dear June,

I took my Brent B to a small engines shop for the same problem, only mine
had stopped altogether. It was an inexpensive part--speed control in the
foot pedal. I wish I had phoned Brent first, because the shop took 3 weeks
to get to it. But I didn't know what was wrong, and all the circuit boards,
etc. looked way confusing. Won't happen again.

Good luck and Merry Christmas,
Cindy in SD
