My question probably needs to go to Ron Roy but here it is.
I need a trnslucent porcelain for slip casting. Needs to fire to be
translucent and fire to cone 6.
The Clayart Archives had some info and there was one recipe that looked
promising.
White Stallion Porcelain, Cone 10, Fara Shimbo
35 grolleg
30 Kona F4 (for crystalline glazes) or G-200 feldspar
20 silica
15 EPK
1 part by addition Neodymium oxide. (makes it look a brighter white)
Can anyone tell me if this porcelain can be changed (and how to change
it) from a cone ten to a cone 6;
or,
Does anyone have a cone 6 porcelain body recipe they would care to
share? My main interest is slip casting of the porcelain, but I would
also be interested in a throwing body as well.
Any thing at all would be appreciated.
TIA,

Look in Richard Zakin`s books, he had a cone 6 recipe I seem to recall.

Hello John,
Couple of pointers that might help:
1. To lower the vitrification temperature you ll need to increase the
feldspar content.
2. For high translucency the TiO2 content needs to be lowered so get rid
of the EPK and replace it with a primary kaolin, you may have seen this
discussed in recent posts. There are a number of english kaolins that are
low in TiO2 and Fe2O3.
All the best,
Andrew

Hi John,
Never did a cone 6 translucent porcelain - so I am speculating again.
the "rule" to drop from cone 10 to cone 6 is sub Neph Sy for the spar - an
excellent place to start. Keep the Grolleg or any other UK kaolin that has
little TiO2 - the key to translucency.
Tom Turner is using a new type of Kaolin from over there - ask him what it
is - I think there was an article in CM a couple of months ago - at the
back where the opinions are.
The standard fix for lowering 25 each of Ball, kaolin, spar and silica cone
10 porcelain is simply to replace the spar with Neph Sy - but don't use the
ball clay - and add enough Neph Sy to get the translucency you want.
Normally the Neph Sy would deflocc the clay and you would have to counter
it but that will not be needed if you are casting of course.

My thanks to all who have responded to my request. I have gotten some
recipes as well and some information on how t adjust the chemistry in
various recipes for clay bodies.
Thanks again.
