question re hyplas ball clay glaze ingredient

Betsy,

I would just go ahead and use a readily available ball clay, whatever
you have.

The difference will probably be small. And after all, ash is not just
ash either.

Hi all,

I am beginning to test some ash glazes, and have been working with Phil
Rogers Ash Glaze book. A number of his interestinh recipes call for Hyplas
ball clay, which is an English ball clay readily avaiable in the UK. Does
anyone know of a source for it in the US (Northeast preferably), or a good
substitute?

Thanks in advance,
Betsy Levine

Thanks, Paul,

I take your point, I was just hoping to cut down my variables a bit at the
start...
And I remember reading in the archives that you can't expect good results
subbing American for English ball clays. However, I just went back to reread
that bit, and I found a link to David Hewitt's site
http://www.dhpot.demon.co.uk/ where he has comparison charts of various US
and UK ball clays. I think I am going to try Kentucky Stone, as it looks to
be the closest from what I can tell.
Thanks again, I'll let you know how it comes out...

Dear Betsy,

Hyplas is not imported into the USA as far as I know. Hamill & Gillespie don't
list it for a start, however it's analysis is on our Raw Materials Data section
on the Bath Potters Website at:

which might help you find a near substitute where you are.

If you have difficulty with the above link, go to and
go to Materials Analysis under Information.

Hi Betsy,

I just made the comparisonand the closest American ball clay is Kentucky
Stone from Kentucky- Tennessee.

Hyplas 71 is unusual in that it has low alumina.

If you send me the recipe and tell me what ball clays you have it would be
easy for me to calculate a substitution using a clay you have
