clay models for molds

When you don't want to soil the plaster with oil:
an option is to take the styro or whatever model and coat it with clay, brush
liquid slip on it if the surface will accept slip and if it will not, you can coat the item
with clay, just cover it with thin strips of clay and smooth out. The clay may stick
in the plaster once set, but should come off the plaster with no problem. Should
come off the mold with no problem as well.
depending on the shape of the form needed, you can reuse the same large lump
of clay over and over to make several shapes to use as molds where the form is no
longer needed after the mold is made. coat the finished clay model
with slip to make the surface smooth before you cast the plaster. After you are done
rewet the clay and keep it aside, well labeled as scrap because any plaster at all makes
it unsuitable for anything other than making models to mold.

Kate, if your dry form has any porosity at all you may have trouble with
the plaster sticking. Clay bisque is a bad choice unless you seal it.

When I was in college we did something similar to this.....made clay
positive on a wide board base. Then made "waste mold" with burlap strips
and plaster. Then coated the plaster negative with murphy's oil soap tinted
blue, and poured a positive.
