Dear Lee

I never sign my work I think labels and names interfere with the work in
many cases. -I do however sign the boxes I put the work in in Japan or if
some American wants verificatlion I do a note with a photo and that I made
it. I think signing is tacky anyway--at least in translucent
nerikomi--nerikomi is tacky enough in most cases without adding a label.
When I demonstrate in Japan, I show how to make Kanji in nerikomi more or
less as a joke and just to show how to make an image.

I have not looked at your work but from how you write, I assume you make
functional possibly Hamada/ Mashiko style work? As a foreigner living in
Mashiko, what is your impression about what the Japanese think about people
making non-traditional work & not signing their work? I haven`t had trouble
selling my unsigned sakazuki, but they come with boxes that are signed.
What is your observation?

By reading what you say about anything, I am curious about your age. What
year were you born?

Best,
D

My work is probably not of a type of interest to you, but here is the
address if you want to look

The two sakazuki on the right which are the same shape but different
colours are the same work with different lighting--I am into making work
which looks one way with light on and another with light in
like lizards who change with environment. I am particularly interested in
using different kaolins to make colour changes by using different kaolins
for naturally making textures when the nerikomi structures are fired in the
kiln,- it goes in flat and comes out with controlled patterned textures.
Also for changing the personality of the piece when the light angle or
source is changed.

I also work with wood kilns--have one in London but always use porcelain
in my work and do white nerikomi porcelains in wood which come out with
flashes. I do architectural stuff also. Am in Japan making my studio work
as well as designing new imaging processes, developing new clays and
products in the ceramic industry.
