Hello,

I need your sage advice as I'd like to purchase a good, reliable intermediate
pottery wheel for my wife as a birthday present. However, I know next to
nothing about pottery. Any suggestions as to brands, models, etc. to look for is
very welcome. I'm thinking about the $500- $700 range.

Many thanks,
mk

There are two types of wheels:
- kickwheels where the rotational motion is imparted by the potters foot, and
- motorized wheels, which have a built-in motor along with either a hand-
or foot-operated speed control

To make things more confusing, you can also get motor attachments for
kickwheels! :-)

If your wife is already an established user of a wheel, then you should
think hard about involving her in the choice. Different people like
different wheels. It is nice to be able to sit at a prospective wheel, to
feel how the tool sits before you and to see how your other tools might
arrange themselves around the work area. You can still make the gift a
surprise though; use your computer to print up a home-made "gift
certificate" for "one pottery wheel" or some such.

Given all that advice ... last year my wife and I purchased the Axner M-300
wheel. You can find that model at
http://www.pottery-books.com/axner/equipment/axnerwheel.php It has proven
to be a strong, reliable tool for two beginners.

Don't be hung up on new. 10 years ago I purchased my Shimpo whisper
(the type that I prefer since it's what I learned on, comfort is the
overriding factor in preference) for $500 can. Meaning ... well
withen your budget. It's an excellent wheel, was 15 years old at the
time and is going strong. I use it often now, but use was sporadic
for the previous 5 years. It's never needed maintenance. I imagine
that quality products from Brent and other manufacturers would have
faired just as well.

Best regards,
Mark.
