stamps can be one of the best personal codes you
can have for the bottoms of pots.
i have dozens of stamps.
they let me know when i made a set of pots, how
i fired them, glaze recipe/clay.
for every new set of pots i change the stamp.
i then take the stamp and make a copy of it
in my note book. (use a rubber stamp pad.)
so, i see a pot that i made 17 years ago.
it is a small m stamp, i think...hmmm, had that stamp
at school, that was a blue/temmoku.
very heavy iron clay body. 1980.
go to my book...there it is.
when doing the jian/chinese glazes i have not
used my mj stamp. these pots are a combination
of mel/joe. they all have new stamps.
i made six new stamps from dowel rod material and a
jewelers saw. two of them are square/ four are round.
i have changed stamps for each clay body that
i have used.
we have kept the iron oxide writing to a minimum.
ruins the pots. we had to do some of that with the
early testing. then keep copious notes. i use a lot of
V .. >>.. sort of codes.
but, stamps are really for the potter...the customer never
knows what they are for....and as long as my stuff has
a mark, no one ever fusses.
the marks are for me.
anyone that tries this, will say in 5 years.

it is when you have made pots for 50 years, and you
can spot them, know how they were fired and where...nice.

over the last few years kurt has changed his signature
to a code system. the word WILD is printed on the
bottom of the pot
at times it looks like this
Wild
Wild_
or WILD_
or wild______
or he changes the shape of the W adds a serif.
so, he knows what firing each of his new pots come from.
he just sold one for $3500.00
we are very pleased for him.
