another arcane question...mochaware

Kate, I am prepping to try mocha diffusion tomorrow for the first time, and
have been reading up on it. Robin Hopper has a good bit of info in his
latest book. Anyway, you do not have to use ciggies for the mocha tea, any
mild acid will do, Hopper recommends apple cider vinegar, one cup of vinegar
to a teaspoon of colorant. I have my slip mixed, my mugs thrown, and in the
morning I will trim and put handles on them, then dip them in the slip. Then
the fun begins!
I will post again when I get home to let you know how it goes.

Hi again, yet another weird question here...

I'm getting ready to try some mochaware, with those interesting mossy shapes
in the glaze made with tobacco juice, among other things. Any reason why
this needs to be a FRESH cigarette, do you suppose? I bought a pack around
6 years ago to do another weird craft thing with, still have them. I've got
a couple of cigars that are fresher, like a year old, too, but pretty dry.
Has anyone tried this? I don't want to be penny wise and pound foolish
here...a pack of cigarettes doesn't cost THAT much.

Any other advice from old hands? Exploring these historic techniques is so
fascinating to me...

Hi Kate,
There is an excellent and informative article in the online magazine
Ceramics Today http://www.ceramicstoday.com/index.html by Robin Hopper
dealing with mochware techniques. Just go the link provided and type 'mocha'
(without the quotes) in search box on the right hand side of the page, click
the CT option to search within ceramicstoday and then click the SEARCH
button. You will get several references to mocha, the second being 'Mocha
Diffusions' by Robin Hopper - well worth reading!
