The Harn Museum here in Gainesville just had the Dark Jewels show of
Chinese historic ceramics w/iron glazes (temmoku, iron spot, etc.), and
I saw that John's web site offered copies of his book The Complete Guide
to High-Fire Glazes, Glazing & Firing at Cone 10 for sale and links to
web publications of his interesting research on oil spot glazes
(w/recipes):

Has anyone tried these?

He has an good article in the current issue of Ceramic Review (Jan/Feb.
#211). The article is called "Flambe Magic", but is actually a nice tech
piece on soluble materials in glazes forming crystals, especially when
stored in cold conditions, and the changes that can make in the fired
glaze. Unfortunately that isn't online, so you'll have to find CR or
invite John in for a workshop to learn more.
