potters who intentionally break their work

updated sat 15 jan 05

I'm looking for potters who intentionally break their work at some point
in the making process and then "reconstruct" them....any names ,websites
or email addresses would be fantastic...also is their a Japanese technique
which encorporates this?

joe shaw on wed 12 jan 05

Genie Thompson is a ceramic instructor in Santa Barbara and shows at
the Santa Barbara Art and Craft Show every Sunday. Her white
horsehair raku is fantastic, she breaks and reassembles them. She has
other talents as well, of course. Don't have her website, not sure if
she has one. But her address is Gitca@aol.com.

Good luck...
Joe Shaw

Dear Helen;

George Kokis did this for awhile. Now, he is letting the pieces
dissolve in the Oregon rain...... and recording their evolution......
or is that devolution? A matter of perspective.

The late Rick Dillingham was well-known for
doing this, and he was consciously aware of the
Japanese precendent (gold/lacquer repairs) when
he started, though he diverged from any obvious
connection quite early on. He started in college
with a few 'visible glue' pieces, but later
made a career of breaking the work, decorating
the work in pieces, then reintegrating the piece
without any particular emphasis on the cracks.
The disjointedness of the surface treatment was
the visible evidence, more so than the cracks
themselves.

The Japanese stuff, of course, was not purposely
broken. The fancy repairs were an elegant way
of saving valued but damaged objects.

Helen -
Two potters are Patrick Crabb and the late Rick Dillingham. You can do web
searches for both of them. Some of the most interesting work I have seen
using that technique is of course the archaeological restoration you see in
museums. I like the pieces where there is a lot of filler reconstructing
the spaces where pieces of the original vessel are missing. Some ancient
Greek vessels are mostly filler, with only a few pieces of the original.
Best wishes -

I amke large slabs and chinese brush paint them, then I raku fire them and flash cool them with a fan allowing them to break. Then I reassemble them. The breaks add to the aethetic.

Helen:
There is a course being taught at Anderson Ranch this year, for that
exact thing. It's called "Vessels: a deconstruction approach to
creativity" and is being taught by Patrick S Crabb.

No connection to either the ranch or Mr Crabb, but since you
asked...for more, according to the catalog, patrickshiacrabb.com

Hope that helps,

Dear Helen Plaxton,
Not sure if he is on the web but try Petrus Spronk, an Australian
Potter, Victoria I think. He uses the Gold Foil method of repair
Best regards
Ivor Lewis.

On 12/1/05 you wrote ....

I have occasionally made creative use and reconstructions of broken pieces
three or four raku here http://www.gartside.info/gallerylowfire12.htm
and a couple here too http://www.gartside.info/gallerypaperclay12.htm

epoxy resin, steel nuts and bolts and even low melting frit in the
raku fire have been employed in the reconcstruction.

I am really curious to know what prompted your interest in this...

I know that Patrick Crabb (patrick crabb )
...try googling him... also practised that method too

Try http://www.jrandallsmith.com/gallery_images.html.

He does raku, breaks them and reconstructs. Amazing stuff.

I have not intentionally broken work, but have had occasion to repair work
for customers. When there is a gap that needs filling, or filling a place
where there is a chip on a rim, I have used epoxy putty. It is easily
moldable, and then I put on powdered gold while it is still tacky. Before
it dries rock hard, I give the gold powder a little rub to polish. After 24
hours, this is a very durable waterproof repair.

The company I purchase the putty from is East Valley Supply
www.EVSupply.com. I recently reordered my stock for this year and found
that they now sell it in white as well as powdered colors are available to
mix with the white so that the patch can match the work. I have used the
putty for many years.

I have no financial interest in this company except that I send my check and
they ship me the product. Very inexpensive material. By the way, it also
repairs leaky water pipes.

Warm regards,

Bonnie Staffel
