Kate,
Cat litter is basically coarsly ground Missouri Fire Clay. The "clumping"
litter has bentonite in it which swells when moisture hits it and the
clump can then be removed.
I had a article in Ceramics Monthly June/July/Aug 2001 called "Over the
Counter" which discussed this and other "local materials" for the urban
potter.
