Are you referring to "Making Marks?" If so, it's extraordinary. Gorgeous
photos to look at, and even better text to read. Robin takes everything we
do to our clay (glaze, underglaze, carving, stamping, engobes, slip, etc.)
and addresses it each in it's own section. Amazing. Definitely a must
have/read.

Hi,
It is wonderful. Many inspiring ideas, easy to follow directions, and lots
for visual oriented folks to look at. I have tried a couple of techniques
from the book, and have had fellow guild folks seek me out to know "how did
you do that?" Fun to hand them a book and say look on page so-and-sa.....
BTW, I ordered it from Overstock.com and got a good price

I think it's the best book I've ever seen about decorating and glazing
techniques. I think it will be just as much a classic as his "Ceramic
Spectrum". And I'm not just saying that because I have a piece pictured in
it- LOTS of other people also have their work in it. It's a beautiful book.

Hi Anne,
My kids gave me the book for Christmas. It is very well done - it fully
covers all the different decorating techniques with lots of tips that will
be new to even experinced potters. (I liked the tip about using Qtips for
making dots instead of a brush when doing brushwork - I tried it and you do
get a more authoritative dot!) Lots of beautiful colour photos - lots of
clayarters in the book and I especially like it as it has quite a few
Canadians. My only criticism would be that the illustrations used on a
particular page don't always correlate to the method being outlined. A five
star book!

Eva; It is yet another great book by a Brit turned Canuck. Robin has done
more to showcase Canadian potters than ten men. He showcases good pots
from wherever. I think he told me he viewed some tens of thousands of slides
to select for this book. He has an eye for pots and a way with words. We're
lucky to have him as a citizen.
I'd say it's a must for a potter's library.
Cheers,

I have it,(Making Marks Discovering the Ceramic Surface) in anticipation of
a workshop with him in Nashville March 8,9 at Mid-South Ceramic Supply. I
have been reading it cover to cover. Some is over my head but as I learn
more about surface decoration it will be invaluable as are all my books.
There are wonderful examples of each type of technique discussed. As they
say . . . "a picture is worth a thousand words."

Even if I hadn't received Christmas money for clay books, I'd
be ordering this one! Robin's books and videos are top-notch
quality.... with loads of thoughtfully selected pictures pf pots.
First thing tomorrow I'll contact Branfman's. =20
I once had a very talented mentee .... far, far more clay talent
than I could ever possess..... but she was (and is) rather
severely dyslexic. Since our relationship entailed minimal
reading or writing, no particular methods were needed to
accomodate dyslexia as I mentored her. When I offered
the opportunity to
view Robin's videos and his colour spectrum book, I mentioned
that they were all chock full of gorgeous images of pots.......
pots of every kind from all sorts of potters. Her feelings were
hurt at what she interpreted as my insensitivity when I seemed to
think that she'd only be interested in pictures.... because of
the dyslexia. In time, she understood that we potters ALWAYS
look for the pictures....... that we buy books like "500 Teapots" and
"500 Bowls" with pictures on every page..... pictures that we
examine minutely.... because we LOVE looking at other folks'
pots.

In the Mojave where the weather has returned to gorgeous
warm days and cool, cool nights. Snow has melted from our
little section of the Sierras; passes are clear; the mudslides
are further south where those poor Californians are continuing
to suffer ill effects. At least, we had no flash floods this
time. There have been years when we've had people in their
cars wash right off Highway 14 down almost
to our scrub acreage. Then the water sinks into the sand leaving
the car-sized boulders scattered about..... and the beaten victim
is left black&blue, with clothes ripped off, broken limbs and other
abused body parts....disbelieving of her surroundings..... talk
about surreal! This has occurred many times.

Dear Eva,
I agree that it is a great book. Beautifully done, and very informative.
I can't help saying that I am one of the people whose work is not accurately
illustrated by the context in which it is placed. On page 195 a piece that
I have made, totally hand decorated with brush and syringe lines, is next to
a bucket, roller and stamps. A mutual friend called this to his attention
and he told her that he was not happy with some things that were out of his
control, such as size and placement of examples, and if I send him a
message he will pass it on to the publisher who will correct it in the event
of a new edition. I know there is little else to be done, but I am happy
with Robin's graciousness. I had the opportunity to talk with him last
NCECA, and he is a very likable person.
I am glad you like the book.
Best, Rikki Gill

Robin's book is the most thorough and comprehensive book on decoration I've seen.
First impression when I got my copy -- there is still so much to learn!
Highly recommended.

I agree. Robin's newest book is wonderful. A very nice amount of information about his earlier years and then a compilation of information from some of his previous books, reorganized, with new imagery. I think it is a very worthwhile purchase and if you were to order today from the Potter's shop, I think that you could get 20% off of it.
take care,
