This looks like a good time to repeat the instructions posted a couple of
weeks ago. As of now we have about a hundred people signed up.
For those of you who are new to Clayart, this is an exchange that has
happened for several years now, during NCECA season. About 250 clay
objects were exchanged last year. Here are the rules. If you want to
participate, please do me a favor and actually read them before writing me
with questions:
This is the Stay-at-Home Clay Exchange, designed for those people who are
not going to NCECA and will therefore be madly jealous as the posts fly
about all the wonderful fun that will be had (and now we have Mendocino to
be jealous about as well -- pooh!) The clay exchange is our (admittedly
inadequate but a heck of a lot more affordable) consolation prize.
This year, the exchange will be limited to those who are NOT attending
Mendocino or NCECA. You lucky ones have exchanges that happen at the
conferences -- let the stay-at-homes have our fun, too.
Like the exchange that happens in the Clayart room at NCECA, this is a
"clay thing" exchange, not strictly mugs.
All staying-at-home Clayart members are welcome to participate -- this is
about making fun connections with other members of this community, not
about obtaining high-value ceramic art.
Please note: If receiving a gift from someone of lesser skill is going to
upset you, I suggest that you not participate. Waiting until you receive
your object and then deciding whether to reciprocate is NOT an option.
Here's what to do if you want to join in:
1. Send me your name and *mailing* (you know, like the post office?) address
(my email is: chris @ lightonecandle.com, take out the spaces)
Non-US residents are welcome to participate. If you have a problem with
paying postage across borders, please let me know when you sign up, and I
won't pair you with an international partner.
2. Make your mug (or teabowl or small vessel or candleholder or whistle,
or small sculpture or whatever.....) and be ready to mail it no later than
March 16, when NCECA starts.
Please, please, PLEASE don't sign up to participate unless you can have a
clay thing ready to mail *in MARCH*, not in May, not after graduation, or
after you build your kiln, or after you find the perfect glaze, or ......
3. On about March 5, I'll make the matches, then send you an email with
the name and address of the person to whom you will send your clay
thing. The person you send something to will also be the person you
receive something from. That is, person A will send a clay thing *to*
person B, and will receive a mug *from* person B.
Matches will be done on a random basis, with the exception that I will
honor preferences about international /noninternational partners, as noted
above, and I will try not to match anyone with the person they exchanged
with last year, to keep things interesting. Requests to
"match me with a really professional potter, not a newbie" will be met with
scorn and derision.
4. As soon as you get the name/address of your partner, get that clay
object in the mail, so that hopefully your partner will receive it during
NCECA and have something to cheer them up. This means that you need to get
busy making it NOW, not wait until March, please.
5. If you have a digital camera, take a picture of your mug before you
mail it, and send it to me for posting in the Clayart Clay Exchange
Gallery, which is half the fun. (Go to http://www.potteryforms.org and
click on Mugs and More to see last year's gallery.)
