to seal the wood & wood filler... most of the original varnished
finish is gone - or the wood will warp. Any suggestions? I liked the
idea that the wood could absorb some of the clay's moisture, but on
second thought, that's probably not a good long-term idea. So....
varnish? shellac? Thompson's water seal?

I use dry cleaners' plastic bags.

I ruined one of my big antique bowls by not preparing it for the wet clay a
long time ago as a newbie. However, a few years ago I purchased some new
untreated wooden bowls and rubbed them with vegetable oil. This made the
wood relatively sealed but still allowed some moisture in the clay penetrate
the wood so as to separate from the mold. This did not always work so on
some bowls I used a physical separator such as cheesecloth or tee-shirt
material. Even clay dust will work. The clay does not release from the
wood as it would from a bisque mold. The center is the last to dry enough
to let go. If there is a knot in the wood, this makes it more difficult,
takes forever.

I have an example of a slump mold pot made using wooden bowls on my Pottery
page, second column, second one down. This pot was then pit fired. This is
an exciting process and opens up a lot of possibilities for creativity.

Warm regards,

I've been so busy slumping slabs in my wooden bowls that I forgot to
thank everyone for the suggestions! Right now, I'm finding that
cleaner's plastic bags are working very well... have also tried muslin
and like it, too.
Thanks for your help - as always it's terrific and much appreciated.
