Hi Sinculture - I use sanded red earthenware for everything - 20%
sanded red, which gives me stability when making earthenware tiles & I
can be confident when using it with the children that I teach that
wherever direction they take I can safely fire the results.

But as you have found, if I trim, scrape or fettle the ware when it is
past 'thick leatherhard' stage, I get little furrows and a pitted
surface from the sand granules.

So I have to be disciplined & keep an eye on the ware & scrape when it
is just right, or live with the slight patterning :)

I don't use stoneware - I'm a medieval/Tudor style UK potter so
stoneware seems far too modern for me!
