I used to live on the Big Island. One of the most beautiful spots in the
world is the Kilauea National Park. It is surrealistic, usually misty. It
has a timeless quality about it. You should stay at Volcano House, which is
right on the edge of the Kilauea crater. That is my favorite hotel.

The most interesting exhibit in Hawaii is in the Kilauea visitor's center.
It is a glass display case containing letters, pieces of lava, and
containers of sand that tourists returned to Hawaii after they went back
home. Someone even returned a pair of tennis shoes that had bits of sand
embedded in the soles. The local people on the Big Island believe that if
you remove sand or lava, the Goddess Pele will punish you.

My parents used to live near the light house in Kapoho. That is considered
the most sacred place in Hawaii, because it is on the easternmost tip of the
state. If you have the chance, visit the light house at night during the
full moon.

Lari,

I've been to the Big Island 3 times and yearn to go back again!

I was unable to locate pottery studios, though one of the little towns south of Kona (Kahaluu maybe?) has a nice gallery with some nice pottery right on the main road to the volcanoe. It's on the left hand side heading south. Sorry I can't be more specific, just keep your eyes peeled!

One of the most amazing experiences of my life was last year, kayaking across Captain Cook Bay to the obelisk monument (to Captain Cook). Then, slipping into the water and snorkeling. It's not a strenuous row, the water and Spinner dolphins are amazing and so was the snorkeling. You can rent a kayak there near the bay.

And you can't miss visiting King Kamehameha's war temple north of Kona near the Parker Ranch. - Pu'ukohola Heiau. And the City of Refuge, Pu'honua, south of Kona.

Definitely, definitely the volcano. We stayed the night there and took a night hike to see the flowing lava. Awesome.

If you find any potter's studios, be sure and report back about them!
