This is Kay Howard from the Jackson (Michigan) Pottery and Clay Guild. =
Although I have not been on Clayart for several years, I would like to =
share some information which may be of interest to many potters. Mary =
Humphrey is a well known and loved Michigan potter. She is active in =
the Michigan Guild of Artists and Artisans, as well as in the planning =
for Michigan Mud, 2005, and the new VP of the JPCG. Some of you may =
have heard about Mary's studio fire on Christmas Eve--the studio =
building itself was a total loss, along with much equipment, chemicals, =
books, finished work, work in process-everything. The fire probably =
started as a result of an overtaxed furnace on that bitterly cold night. =
A potter's worst nightmare. Her insurance was not nearly enough to =
replace what was lost, so Mary and husband Dar face big loan payments. =
Everyone who knows Mary knows that she is unfailingly generous of her =
time, expertise and studio space in order to further clay art. We now =
have an opportunity to show how much her efforts are appreciated.
So--at the original suggestion of John Glick--Jackson's Ella Sharp =
Museum (where Mary heads the ceramics program) and JPCG are holding a =
benefit event and silent auction on Sunday, Feb 27 from 2-4 at the =
museum. (Mapquest will get you there). Good will donations will be =
accepted at the door; all proceeds from donations and auction items will =
go to Mary. We are looking for donations for the auction, (not limited =
to ceramic art pieces) and also bidders. We have pieces from John =
Glick and IB Remsen, as well as pieces from several other potters from =
the recently closed fabulous "Form meets Function" exhibit at the museum =
which Mary curated. We are still in the planning process, but I do know =
that pieces can be shipped to Ella Sharp Museum ( 3225 Fourth, Jackson, =
MI 49203), monetary donations and good wishes can be sent directly to =
Mary (9325 Clinton Rd., Jackson, MI 49201; mhceramics@aol.com ) While =
we obviously need items for the auction, we also really need folks to =
put it on the calendar and to come out to bid.
For more information please contact me off list at =
capclay@modempool.com or 517-522-4771; or contact Ella Sharp museum =
517-787-2320 or amyw@ellasharp.org .
Thank you so much for the chance to share this information, and =
thanks in advance to anyone who can help us with donations or will come =
out to bid. ( Of course, if I don't have too much competition for J. =
Glick's piece...:>)
