EPK is mined from the Edgar Plateau in Florida.
It is more plastic than many kaolins, no doubt that
is why it specifies.

edgar plastic kaolin is mined in edgar, florida. edgar is located a few miles
south of state road 20. edgar is not really a town, just a bunch of small
ranchettes and houses scattered thru the dry rolling scrub lands. lots of dust
and poverty. small sinkhole lakes are everywhere . the closest town is
interlachen about five miles north of edgar. the clay mine has a railroad spur into the
site. my locksmith buddy recently bought five acres in edgar, he commutes to
gainsville- university of florida about 30 miles west on sr20. palatka is on
sr20 on the st johns river about 20 miles east on sr20. jacksonville is about
60-70 miles northeast. a very laidback southern area. people still speak
english there- a good place to raise kids. here in palm beach county the cubans,
puertoricans, domicans, mexicans, nicaraguans, guatmalans, haitians, columbians,
venazulans, ecudorians,...... have made a english speaking irish english
german pole like me a minority. radio, tv, and signs in all these languages, they
are being taught in thier native languages in our public schools- i'm ready
to jump out the window, my pottery is the only thing that keeps me sane. sorry
for the rant- i feel better now.

One thing about Mr. Edgar was his realization of the value of the clay deposit, and he bought up around 2500 acres, SW of Jacksonville right in the center of the state; (Edgar) Florida.
The deposit runs far to the south, right down the middle of Florida, but is covered by development, including Disney World. There's 50 years of deposit left, according to Mr. Shelar, the quality control manager at the mine, at about 40,000 tons mined per year. It's plastic because EPK is a secondary kaolin, that is it has been moved from its primary location in the mountains of the Carolina's by water, in the Pleistocene era, many millions of years ago. Because the clay has been moved by the action of water, heavier particles had a chance to settle out, leaving more plastic finer particles for us to use. Ron Roy says EPK is very consistent from batch to batch, but Jon Pacini says he gets complaints that EPK bodies sometimes arrive a darker color in people's studios. I've talked to Mr. Shelar about this and he says their testing indicates the darker veins actually fire whiter than any other kaolin in the EPK deposit.
