I recently came across an unusual kind of respirator that works well for
people with beards - of course I can't remember where online, but I suppose
with some magic googling you could find it - Unlike most that cover your nose
and mouth area, this is more like you'd have for snorkeling - there is a
mouthpiece (that you breath into) and the tube goes around your head and the
respirator thing is back there - of course you have a noseclip - the good thing
is also that the dust is less present in the back where the filter is - AND
you don't have that big thing on your face - the bad thing is that apparently
it takes a little getting used to to breath through your mouth and it can be
drying for your throat - sounds like a solution to me!

This respirator design appears to be a design that would function
well for anybody, but especially for us of the bearded variety,
unfortunately on reading the specifications, it is intended for
nuisance dusts only - and what we work with are far beyond nuisance
dusts. So unless the proper filter cartridge could be fitted to this
respirator, it would not be appropriate for silica dusts.
