Dan,
I had good luck starting with the simple Leach 4321 glaze.
40 spar
30 silica
20 whiting (limestone)
10 kaolin or ball clay
I added 5 or 6% zircopax to make it white. You can use less on porcelain, need more opacifier on stoneware. However, some of the zirconium crystallizes on the surface and it isn't quite (almost, but not quite) as glossy as a glaze free of this opacifier.
Where you go from the basic 4321 glaze depends on the glaze fit you want.
This is a very durable glaze with enough silica to give it an excellent gloss.
I hope this helps.
Good potting!

have an opaque white glossy liner glaze that is reliable on stoneware
they would be willing to share? I fire cone 9-10 gas reduction.

I have tried several recipes for use on the insides of bowls and mugs
etc. but they all turn out gray and slightly transparent. Does anyone
have an opaque white glossy liner glaze that is reliable on stoneware
they would be willing to share? I fire cone 9-10 gas reduction.
Thank you

Dear Dan,
I use the following glaze for a cone 10 white liner on my ash-glazed
stoneware pieces. A bit thicker application keeps it milky white; if
applied thinly on a heavy iron body fired in strong reduction, it would be
grayish & speckled:
Leach White c10 R glossy
40.00 Custer Feldspar
30.00 Flint
20.00 Whiting
10.00 EPK
100.00 total
Also add:
2.00 Tin Oxide
8.00 Zircopax
2.00 Bentonite
If you want something that's a bit more satin matt and opaque, I would try
the following glaze base with similar additions of Tin and/or Zircopax:
20 Flint
41 Custer Feldspar
5 EPK
15 Talc
12 Gerstley Borate
7 Dolomite
The above glaze is a really nice, smooth satiny matt cone 10 base. I use it
for a soft "Waxy Turquoise" with .5% cobalt carb and .5% chrome, but it
would make a really nice white/opaque with Tin & Zircopax. Works well on
stoneware or porcelain.
Good luck!

Dan, just add some opacifier to your gray and semi-transparent
glazes. 5 or 6 percent Ultrox or Zircopax will do the trick.
It will give a very white white.
Tin oxide, @ 3 or 4 % will give a warmer white.
6 or 8 percent rutile will give you a slightly mottled ivory
color.
You could try a combination, like 2% of each.
Glad to see you back on Clayart, but surprised to see you
are in Detroit

Dear David,
So good to hear from you again Davo. It's been a long time since I've
been on Clayart. I have threads that go back years.
But the point is yes, I'm baaaack!!. I'm looking forward to really
busting out so I'll be seeing you sometime.
Thanks for your suggestions.
Frankly, I kinda knew I was being a bit lazy about this glaze issue
(Zircopax being an obvious direction to go)
But I was thinking that I might draw in some unique perspectives,
different glazes.
The glazes I have fit nicely, no problem there so I try Zircopax or, I
have a lot of Superpax, I'll try that.
Many thanks my friend.
Good luck at NCECA I would have loved to put my mug in the hands of one
of your muggettes. Like Bonnie Hellman for example.
Warm regards,
Dan Saultman
