I was diagnosed with carpal tunnel and received two cortisone injections
several months apart. I was told that more than two injections of cortisone
could cause flexor tendon damage, so surgery was my next option. The
orthopedic surgeon suggested I take 200- 300 mg. of B-6 daily. Just taking
a B complex vitamin is not adequate. It took several weeks to work, but it
has kept me from having surgery for three years and counting. If I stop
taking B-6, my pain returns.
Another condition of the wrist, that is often confused with carpal tunnel,
is deQuervains Tendonitis. This is an over use injury that is rampant among
potters. I was off from my job for 3 days, due to snow. I spent those days
throwing and the next several months in pain until I had the tendon
surgically released. The surgery was a breeze and I was throwing in days.

POTTERY: It's a wet, dirty job, but somebody has to do it.
