Hello ClayArt!
We are writing to introduce you to the MudFire workshop center in
Atlanta...we've got some great workshops coming up including Mel Jacobson,
Tom Kerrigan, Gay Smith, and Kathy Triplett.
We hope you can visit us soon for an inspiring workshop weekend and also
enjoy the dining, galleries, shopping, and entertainment that Atlanta has to
offer. If you'd like to receive direct notices of upcoming workshops,
please visit our website and complete the "Info & Invites" form at
http://www.mudfire.com/newsletter.htm or give us a call at 404-377-8033.
Here's what is coming along soon....
Mel Jacobson, Throwing Stories
February 26-27
Mel will do a multiple level throwing workshop with emphasis on learning to
throw the "repeated form". Japanese hump throwing is taught, along with
using many kinds of measuring devices. Those that have never thrown anything
larger than three pounds will be excited to see how anyone can throw 25
pounds. He will also make a teapot the size of a walnut. The audience will
be encouraged to ask questions, show their own work for critique and discuss
any problems in clay. The workshop will be fun, fast paced and
non-threatening.

Tom Kerrigan, Clay + Spirit
March 12-13
Join Thomas Kerrigan, University of Minnesota Professor Emeritus, for a two
day hands-on workshop to create clay sculptures and sculptural vessel forms
using simple handbuilding techniques. There will also be extensive
exploration into surface treatments especially pre-fire approaches to
surface. Kerrigan will give numerous demonstrations including his approaches
to double-wall constructions and building forms upside-down. The conceptual
emphasis of the workshop will be to create objects that resonate both
personally and spiritually...objects that express inner consciousness and
have a personal spiritual resonance.

Gay Smith, Working Wet
May 14-15
Gay Smith will demonstrate ways of altering the form and surface of freshly
thrown pots. Pots made in this way can look spontaneous and animated,
reflecting the process of working with wet clay. Porcelain clay will be used
in the demonstration, but these techniques may be used just as well with
stoneware and earthenware. Squaring, ovaling, fluting, and faceting will be
shown. And finishing the pots will include trimming, cutting, and adding
feet and handles. Gay will also show slides.

Coming later in the year: handbuilding with Kathy Triplett, ash glazing
with Mark Issenberg, piecing together large pots with Chuck Solberg, and
building your own photo booth.
We hope to see you soon!
