For any who are interested in colored porcelain -
The images of my newest work using Southern Ice
Porcelain mixed with paper fibres ... adding colors and
creating murrini patterns then using them for vessels ...
( phewww ... that sounds
really complicated !)
are now posted on my web site under 'Products' and
'In the Studio' February 2005.
This process has been really fascinating.
Usually, when you work with a murrini the outside of
the vessel is the same as the inside. But, with the paper
added I am getting a third 'ghost' image between the
two layers. You can see all three when you hold the
bowls up to the light.
Yet the bowls are very thin and ring beautifully when
tapped.
I have had to invent a new method of slicing the loaves
from the top since slicing from the bottom was not working
out very well. Too much gunk on the wire.
I am now firing them in the same clay bowl they are built in and
this is saving me a lot of grief.
The next lesson .... well maybe four or five or six lessons
down the road ... will be developing a nice thin Cone 04 satin matte
clear glaze with some tooth to it since I hate the feel of a
slick glaze on these pots.
This has been the best learning experience. I highly recommend
stepping out on a ledge to anyone who is playing nice
and behaving themselves.

time I will bring them with me so people can see my weird pots.
