there is no question that thorley is going
through some very difficult times.

i do not know details, just that laguna is
trying to re/do the entire line.

because they are having problems with
kiln shelves does not mean their clay
or other products are of poor quality.

they will work this out in time. it is
just a very difficult problem.

their bus is stuck in the mud and
they can't seem to get it out...a wrecker
is on the way.

Mel,
I understand your defense of Laguna. And, I would be more willing to
give them slack IF this problem had not been going on so long and IF
they had been responsive when I contacted them about the problem. They
never got back to me and when I called back I was always sent to voice
mail. It was only when I posted the problem on Clayart that I got a
response and refund. It seems three (or more?) years is a long time to
take to solve a problem that didn't exist before they took over the
production.

Hi folks,
- I had 3 Thorley shelves crack on me this year- same spot/same length
of crack down the middle. They were stamped ?/?/05 - dont have the rest of
the batch # at home here . They made it through an 04 bisque- but cracked
on a cone 6 glaze fire. They also have that funky extrusion mark on them.
I have used older shelves by them for years as many have and had no
trouble.
As I teach in a public school and use public funds I need products to
work or have people stand behind them when they dont. I contaced Laguna
about the problem but recieved no response. I talked to my supplier and
got some run around about my post placement- 3 posts stacked one over the
other.
My point is when this stuff happens it takes me away from teaching kids
and running a program and puts me in damage control mode. It becomes really
troublesome when the buck is passed or not acknowledged at all. It is poor
business practice.

I do understand that the company was bought out, and they have to work the
bugs out. But . . . I kind of agree with Kathi, how long does it take to
work out those bugs? And I have heard other persons difficulties in
dealing with the problem through Laguna, that Laguna has not exactly
provided great customer service concerning this problem. I have the
fortune of having bought my shelves from my distributor who have thus far
replaced my shelves immediately, and then THEY deal with Laguna. I have no
issue with the company per se, I use Laguna clay, but will not buy another
shelf from them until they announce the problem has been fixed.

i bought 4 shelves from the Laguna Byesville, OH plant, picked them up
there, and they cracked immediately.
So i posed a message, in all caps as usual, that said "THORLEY KILN SHELVES
CRACKED AFTER ONE FIRING - WHY?"
and that's when i found out this happened to everyone else who bought them.
So i called Laguna and the person i spoke with already knew about my
problem since she read it on clayart and gave me a refund right away, no
further questions asked. I offered to send a digital picture of them but
she said it was not necessary.
So for those of you who have had this happened and have not received your
refund, just be persistant and you will get your money back. Laguna is a
responsible company, they read clayart and respond to things potters say
about them.

Thanks to all who replied, both on- and off-list, to my query. I now
know everything and more -- a bread recipe -- about Thorley shelves.
